The World
Lebanese Cultural Union Geographic Regional Council of Australia and New Zealand
held a meeting in Adelaide on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July to discuss the
current crisis in Lebanon. Delegates from Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne,
Adelaide and New Zealand evaluated the effect of the Israeli bombardment of
Lebanon and the Lebanese civilians that is leading to a huge humanitarian
crisis, and issued the following statement:
- The Geographic Regional Council of
the WLCU is shocked and devastated by the result of the heavy and
disproportionate force used by the Israeli against Lebanon and its innocent
civilians. While the world is watching silently or supporting and justifying
the unjustifiable, Israel is destroying the historic home of the human
values, Lebanon.
- The Geographic Regional Council of
the WLCU calls for an immediate cease fire, so that humanitarian aid can
reach the hard stricken Lebanese people regardless of any political
persuasion. We remind the international community that in the last three
weeks of bombardment, over 800 people have died, over 2000 people injured
and 800,000 have been displaced.
- The Geographic Regional Council of
the WLCU condemns all attacks against civilians on either side and supports
the implementation of United Nation Resolution 1559, but in a peaceful and
diplomatic manner.
- The World Lebanese Cultural Union
thanks the Australian government, the opposition and the Australian people
for their effort to evacuate the Australians from Lebanon. At the same time
as the Council denounces any irresponsible act that may lead to disturb
harmony within the Australian community, the Council urges and implores the
Australian government to use its influence to pressure Israel to stop the
massacre in Lebanon.
- The 500,000 Australians from
Lebanese descent and their friends pray silently with sadness in their
hearts for the loss of so many innocent Lebanese children in Qana, the
village where a man from Israel 2000 years ago, our Lord Jesus Christ,
performed his first miracle by turning water into wine. Today, another man
from Israel turned the wine into blood dashing on the streets of Qana.
